The DMS-1 URBAN system is a digital subscriber carrier that extends regular telephone service and special services from a switching center to residential and business communities. The system accommodates up to 576 lines (onl y 544 lines with SPR 18 and SPR 19) in various mixes of Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS), Coin, Meridian Business Set (MBS), and Special Service (SS) lines, on one to eight digital links. The links may be standard DS1 transmission lines, digital radio, or optical fiber cable.
The main application of the DMS-1 URBAN system is to increase the number of subscribers that can be economically served by a feeder cable. For a full-capacity system providing 576 lines (only 544 lines with SPR 18 and SPR 19), up to 16 cable pairs for digital transmission (or 2 pairs of fiber for optical transmission) and up to 4 pairs for maintenance services can be used between the CT and RT.
