Platform

The SS8 Service Controller 3100 (SC3100) Unified Communications Platform (UCP) is the heart of the SS8 Unified Messaging Platform (UMP). The UMP provides service providers with a solution for delivering plain old voice mail (POVM) concurrently within both a classic Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) / Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN) and a IP/Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) environment, i.e., an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and Voice-over-IP (VoIP) environment.  Augmenting the POVM solution, the SC3100 UMP is replete with a suite of robust and flexible applications that can deliver an integrated unified communications environment with a fully customizable browser-based interface.

User access to, and manipulation of, stored messages and tailored auto-attendant options can be uniquely personalized and branded by an individual service provider.  The SC3100 UMP also provides service providers with a distinct competitive edge, facilitating the rapid introduction of advanced unified communications offerings such as dynamic speech user interfaces, text-to-speech conversion, a synchronized, network-based address book/calendar, find-me/follow-me services, and cross-network message-waiting notification.

The SC3100 UCP combines a robust, standards-based, distributed computing architecture with comprehensive internal service engines, integrated applications, and open-application, programming interfaces.  The result is a platform capable of providing an array of high-available, unified communications services, which can scale from a few thousand to many millions of subscribers.  Managing the transition from AIN to IMS Capable of delivering today’s, crucial revenue-generating services, the SC3100 UCP acts as a Transitional Network Element (TNE) for service providers seeking to migrate their messaging applications to next generation network architectures. Once this migration is complete, the SC3100 UCP continues as an integral and flexible part of a fully compliant IMS solution.

Hardware

The Service Controller 3100 is currently available in two hardware platforms – Small Platform (SP) and Large Platform (LP). The basic architecture does not change as the system scales from an entry-level small system to a large system of several thousand ports.

It is important to note that the Small Platform can be incrementally expanded past its limits by interconnection to a new Large Platform. Once the new LP platform is installed, all system processors are moved to the LP platform, and the existing SP platforms are then utilized as media servers for the LP.  Thus, the service provider can start with a Small Platform and scale up to the largest possible configuration without replacing existing hardware components. In all cases, 100% of the hardware processors as well as the SP chassis are utilized. Depending on the storage requirements of the expanded system, the Network Attached Storage (NAS) server may be reused or replaced as required.

The SC3100 hardware is designed to be entirely standards-based.  Built on Compact PCI compartment with H.110 bus, the chassis and cards are compliant with PICMG specifications.  The off-the-shelf NAS server is configured to have RAID 5 redundancy. All hardware fits into the industry standard 19” rack.  The DC version of the LP hardware is NEBS-certified.

The following are pictures of SP and LP systems, respectively for comparison:

All applications in the system are executed on Solaris/SPARC based processor cards that plug into the Compact PCI chassis.  All processor cards are interconnected via dual high-speed Ethernet backbones. This IP-based backbone eliminates the need for complicated cabling in the back plane.  All cards are hot-swappable.

The hardware components of the SC3100 can be classified into the following functional units:

♦   Main Chassis

♦  Processor Cards

♦  Line Cards

♦  Auxiliary Cards

♦  Ethernet Equipment

♦  Network Attached Storage (NAS) Server
